If you are wanting to switch your cat to a raw food diet - Be prepared for a long strenuous battle.
Or maybe you'll be one of the lucky ones and your cat will switch over with ease.
For me and my cats... We had a battle (well really just with Eli)
Switching a cat to raw is much different than switching a dog, for a dog you can simply fast them until they are hungry and then give them raw. However fasting or starving a cat into switching is NOT recommended. A cat will let itself starve.
First thing you want to do when switching to raw is to stop free feeding. Your cat needs to be on scheduled feeding times either 2 or 3 times day, once you have established this then you can start your transition.
At first my cats Eli and Portia were eating canned food. Which is better than any kibble because cats are obligate carnivores and are designed to get pretty much all of their water from their food. On a dry food diet cats consume only about half the amount of water required for adequate hydration. But with wet cat food they receive their water while eating, and that is why my cats were first on a canned food diet.
It is easier to switch a cat from canned food to raw, so your first step might be to switch them to a wet cat food.
Once they are ready to switch to raw you must start a little at a time, if your cats are anything like my Eli then you will have to start with an extremely small amount of raw in their wet food. I'm talking a pea sized amount.
When I first went to switch Eli, I put about a nickle sized amount and he turned up his nose and would not eat! What a brat. Portia on the other hand was easy to switch over, she simply ate what I gave her.
Leave it at a pea size for a week or so and then slowly add another pea sized amount... Make sure your cat is still eating normally before adding more.
You may also try placing a chunk of raw in their bowl just next to their wet food, this will help them associate the raw with their food.
Slowly as you start increasing the amount of raw food you can start decreasing the amount of wet food. This process could take up to 6 months! But fear not because 99% of cats can be fully switched to raw. And once switched the benefits will be well worth it!
